Parents and guardians can ask to use MyChart to manage a child or young person’s health record. This is called having ‘proxy access’.

You’ll have your own MyChart login but see your child’s health information in the app. This allows you to help them by:

  • seeing appointment details and cancelling outpatient appointments if necessary
  • completing information before appointments, including updating their health record or flagging concerns
  • completing questionnaires to help them manage a condition
  • replying to messages from clinical and administrative staff, if the staff member has selected this as an option
  • receiving test results and communications from healthcare professionals

Requesting access to your child’s account

MyChart access for under 18s is managed by healthcare staff who will consider their needs, wishes and best interests.

Speak to your child’s healthcare team to request proxy access to your child’s health record.

12 years old and younger

Children aged 12 or younger cannot have their own MyChart login.

Parents or guardians who want to use MyChart to keep up to date with their child’s care can request and manage an account for their child.

13 to 15 years old

When your child turns 13, they can ask for their own MyChart login.

A trained member of staff will decide if your child can access their own account. This is based on your child’s ability to understand their options and make informed decisions. If they think it’s OK, they can set up an account for your child.

You can ask for proxy access to help them manage their care.

  • If your child has their own login, they must give their permission.
  • If your child does not have their own login, we can give people with parental responsibility proxy access.

We’ll always let children 13 or over know who has access to their account.

16 to 17 years old

Young people 16 or over can create their own MyChart account by signing up online or asking a member of staff to send an activation code.

You can ask for proxy access to help them manage their care, but your child must give their permission.

18 or older

When your child turns 18, your proxy access will be removed automatically. They can decide who has proxy access to their account by logging in to MyChart.

Sometimes proxy access may stay in place if your child needs extra support.

Decisions not to give proxy access

It’s the decision of the healthcare professional to give access to an adult with caring responsibilities. Sometimes, we decide not to and this could be for different reasons.

You can speak to your healthcare team, or to our Information Governance team if you have questions or concerns.

Information available with proxy access

If you have proxy access to a child’s account, you’ll be able to see certain information. This includes:

  • parts of your child’s health record
  • communications from their healthcare team
  • most test results
  • appointments

However, there are parts of their record that are protected and will not be visible.
