We are making improvements to Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) and Orpington Hospital. Over the next few years there will be a number of exciting new building projects across our sites.

PRUH

Car park expansion

We have expanded the main car park by building a new, single-storey car parking deck at the front of the hospital.

The new deck creates an additional 148 car parking spaces. Its design meant that the majority of the structure could be built offsite, before being delivered and fitted together. This helped limit the impact on the day to day running of the hospital, and reduced building noise for our neighbours. It also helped reduce waste and limited our impact of the environment.

The new car parking facility opened in December 2022.

Day Surgery Unit connecting corridor

We have built a new, permanent connecting corridor at the PRUH which links the South Wing of the main hospital with the day surgery unit, situated in the rear courtyard.

The new corridor replaces the temporary cover that has previously been in place. It provides a more appropriate and pleasant experience for patients who are transferred between these two locations for their care.

The new connecting corridor opened in spring 2023.

New Endoscopy Unit

In 2023, work started on the construction of a brand new endoscopy unit.

By creating a state-of-the-art, purpose built endoscopy unit, we will be able to expand our existing endoscopy service, and treat more patients that we are able to currently.

By upgrading our facilities and creating a more pleasant hospital environment, we will enhance patient care and experience.

Staff wellbeing hub

The PRUH wellbeing hub is a calm space for staff. It offers a quiet place to recharge, as well as both practical and emotional support.

The hub opened in spring 2020.

Orpington Hospital

Operating Theatre

We have built a new state-of-the-art operating theatre at Orpington Hospital.

The operating theatre and recovery suite means that our teams will be able to do many more orthopaedic procedures each year, reducing waiting times for people who need surgery for knee and hip replacements for example.

The steel used in the build has at least 25% recycled content and as the whole unit was built in an off-site factory – before being delivered and fitted together at the hospital – where 90% of the waste produced was also able to be recycled.

The theatre opened in summer 2022.

Staff wellbeing hub

The Orpington Hospital wellbeing hub is a calm space for staff. It offers a quiet place to recharge, as well as both practical and emotional support.

The hub opened in spring 2020. It moved to a new, purpose-built location in the hospital courtyard in summer 2022.
